Child
welfare workers in Oakland walked off the job in 1990 to protest
cutbacks in services. As one worker at the demonstration stated,
"I have an 11-year-old girl [in my caseload] who has been molested
since she was four, and I can't afford to send her to counseling
every week because of budget cuts. It is really just ridiculous.
She is going to be worse off and end up costing us more money in
the long run." |
