In the early 1970s the second wave of feminists were pushing for an Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which earlier feminists had failed to achieve. Many union women feared they would lose more than they would gain. "Immediately after the Equal Rights Amendment was ratified in Sacramento, the Bank of America announced it would discontinue taxi service for women workers on the night because men had complained of sex discrimination.…Union WAGE organized a protest at the Powell and Market branch of Bank of America calling for the continuation of cab service and its extension to men….Many groups and individuals participated: the Women's Group of Berkeley, members of the Office and Professional Employees, Yellow Cab drivers in Teamsters local 256…. The men denied bringing charges of sex discrimination and said all they had asked for was a parking lot." (Union W.A.G.E. newspaper January 1973). |
